Centralised Analytical Laboratory (CAL) is one of the services centers under the Laboratory Management Department (LMG)
of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). It is equipped with a state-of-the-art analytical instrument. It provides analytical
services to researchers and industries from various organizations in green technology, solar energy,
nanotechnology, electronics, environmental, oil, gas, petrochemicals, etc.
The facilities is equipped with Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffractometer (SCXRD). SCXRD is a non-destructive analytical technique which allow for absolute information on the internal lattice of crystalline substances, including bond distances, bond orders, bond angles, shapes of coordination polyhedral, conformations of flexible molecules, as well as intermolecular contacts.
The facilities is equipped with two units of X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD). Which is XRD Thin Film and XRD Powder. XRD is a technique used to determine the atomic and molecular structure of a crystal, in which the crystalline atoms cause a beam of incident X-rays to diffract into many specific directions.
The facilities is equipped with Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC). SAXS is capable of delivering structural information of macromolecules between 5 and 25 nm, of repeat distances in partially ordered systems of up to 150 nm. While DSC is a thermal analysis technique in which the heat flow into or out of a sample is measured as a function of temperature or time, while the sample is exposed to a controlled temperature program.
The facility is equipped with one unit of Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and two units of Raman. AFM is widely used for imaging friction between surfaces, the viscosity of liquids, the elasticity of materials, electrical forces, magnetic forces, conductivity, capacitance, and surface potential, among many other properties. While Raman spectroscopy can provide key information about chemical composition and material structure.
The facility is equipped with X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). XPS is a quantitative analysis tool that can provide the elemental composition (excluding hydrogen) and information on chemical bonding environments and oxidation states within the upper 1-10 nm of the surface and reveal relative ratios or atoms of co-existing chemical states.
Microscopy is the science of investigating and imaging small objects and structures using microscopes as an advanced imaging instrument to view objects, samples and areas of objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye or objects that are not within the resolution range of the normal eye. The specifically-designed microscopes have features that allow the microscopes to interface to an image processing system using image analysis software that covers the use of digital image processing techniques to process, analyze and present images obtained from a microscope.
